Back in 2010, we were very excited by the opportunity to work with the fantastic Quentin Blake. First of all, Puffin approached us, requesting a pop-up book adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, insisting on pop-up spreads so spectacular you could spot them from across the street!

One of the biggest challenges was telling the abridged story in only ten double-spread pages. In the end, we decided to include a double-spread for each of the character’s iconic demise. For example, on one double-spread, a pull-tab triggers Augustus Gloop to fall in the chocolate river and introduces the musical Oompa Loompas. Additionally, we designed a complex pop-up spread that shows Willy Wonka’s factory in all its eccentric glory. Having been translated into many languages, the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Pop-up Book is as popular as Willy Wonka’s golden tickets!
