Promotional Pop-Up Book: Nightmares on Ambien Street
Collaborating with the creative minds at Bosun, we created an ambitious promotional pop-up book: Nightmares on Ambien Street, exploring the unsettling realities surrounding sleep medication dependency and the experiences of patients.
Format: Portrait
Client: Bosun
Size: 185mm x 250mm

We worked closely with the Bosun team throughout the development stage of the project. Initially, they provided rough sketches and reference images showing what they hoped to achieve with the pop-up book. Additionally, Bosun’s writers had developed fairytale-style poetic narrative, which helped steer the visual storytelling and set the book’s gothic atmosphere. From there, we spent some time exploring how all of these ideas could work in practice. Eventually, we created detailed PDF sketches that set out our design proposals for each of the book’s spreads. In particular, we mapped out the different paper mechanisms and pop-up elements, showing how each scene would move and unfold as the reader progresses through the book.

Soon, we began creating mock-up versions of the book, refining the pop-up mechanisms as we went. As the book’s structure began taking shape, we also began searching for a suitable illustrator. Fortunately, it wasn’t long until we found the incredibly talented Ang Hui Qing who, like us, is based in the South West of the United Kingdom. Working from our creative brief, Ang Hui Qing immediately captured the book’s dark, fairytale-like style with distinctive, atmospheric illustrations.

It is always a pleasure to create a promotional pop-up book: Nightmares on Ambien Street was particularly fun! We loved collaborating with the Bosun team and seeing the project evolve from early sketches into a fully realised, illustrated, and engineered pop-up book.
